I’m New

As a parish church, our doors are open to everyone and we would love to welcome you to one of our services. There is no dress code and no charge. Someone friendly will be at the door to greet you and help you to feel at home. Here is some more information about the different services available as well as how to go about arranging a christening or wedding. Keep an eye on the calendar for special services and events.

Church Services

10am traditional service

At 10 am on Sundays we have Matins on the first Sunday of the month and traditional Holy Communion on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays with organ music and hymns, usually led by a choir. Afterwards we enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits in the new parish centre.

3 pm Crafty Church!

At 3pm on the fourth Sunday of every month, except when stated, we have informal, craft based worship, and discussions to help us explore the Bible, combined with tea, coffee and cake in the parish centre. Aimed at young families and the young at heart! On the first Sunday in the month, we have informal Communion in church. The songs are modern, usually led by live guitar and/or keyboard.

4pm (once a month) Evensong

At 4pm on the third Sunday of every month, we hold a traditional service of Evensong with hymns, prayers and a sermon. The Psalm and Canticles are sung to Anglican chant. This is a lovely, quiet, reflective service to conclude the day.

Other regular services

Morning Prayer is said at 9am in church on the vast majority of Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Thursdays, church is open 9-12 with coffee and wi-fi available and a short traditional service of Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) is usually held at 10am. Everybody is welcome to drop in but do check the bulletin in case of changes.

Baptisms

Baptism (often called christening) is a way of giving thanks and welcoming people into God’s worldwide family. Through baptism we belong to God, we are members of the family of the Church, and we begin a new journey with Jesus.

Anyone can be baptised, no matter how old or young, as long as they haven’t been baptised before.

Baptisms normally take place on Sunday mornings at one of the regular services, but may take place at other times in consultation with the vicar.

To book a baptism, you are invited to come along to a Sunday service at 10am or 3pm. After the service, a member of the pastoral team will take your details over coffee.

Weddings

We are always delighted when people choose to get married at St Denys. To be entitled to get married in the church you need to live in the parish, or be on the electoral roll, or have a significant connection to the church.

If you are not sure if you qualify then please contact the Administrator by e-mailing: office@stdenys.org.uk

For further information about getting married in church visit the Church of England’s Weddings website here: https://www.yourchurchwedding.org/

It is also possible to have a blessing of the marriage in church after a civil ceremony, and a renewal of wedding vows at any stage.

Banns

If you are getting married in another church but are resident in the parish of St Denys, you need to have a banns certificate. Please contact the Administrator to arrange this, who will put you in touch with the right person in the church. E-mail: office@stdenys.org.uk
